Architectural asphalt shingles are on the majority of houses in the west metro for good reason. They're cost-effective, widely stocked, quick to install, straightforward to repair, and they come in impact-resistant grades that matter in hail country.
Asphalt has the shortest service life of the three, and it's the most sensitive to poor attic ventilation. A hot, under-vented attic will age shingles from the underside — which is why we treat ventilation as part of the roof, not an add-on.
Standing seam metal is a strong fit for Minnesota. Snow and ice slide off it rather than sitting on the eaves, which helps with ice dam pressure. Panels shed water fast, resist wind uplift well when detailed correctly, and last a long time.
Metal also pairs well with modern and lake-adjacent architecture, which is why we see more of it on homes near Lake Minnetonka and in Shorewood than in older inland subdivisions.
Synthetic roofing — engineered polymer products made to mimic slate or cedar shake — is the newest of the three families. It's light, dimensionally stable through freeze-thaw cycles, and generally more impact-tolerant than the natural materials it imitates.
The trade-offs are cost and product variation. Quality across brands is uneven, so the specific product and its installation instructions matter as much as the category.
If your block has been hit more than once, impact resistance should weigh heavily. Impact-rated asphalt and synthetic products handle strikes well; metal may dent without leaking.
No material prevents ice dams on its own — they're caused by heat escaping into the attic. But metal's shedding behavior plus proper ice-and-water membrane at the eaves reduces how much damage a bad winter can do.
All three can perform in high wind when installed to spec. Failures we see are almost always nailing patterns, starter courses, and edge metal — not the shingle itself.
For most Minnetonka and Eden Prairie homes, a quality impact-resistant architectural asphalt roof with correct ventilation and eave protection is the best value available. Metal makes sense when you plan to stay decades or have a snow-shedding problem to solve. Synthetic makes sense when appearance is the priority.
